Pathways for Everyone
Play socially or go competitive – there are national events, state leagues, and representative pathways if you want to take it further.

How to Play: The Basics

6-a-side on the field (with up to 14 in the squad)
No tackles – just a touch stops the play
Pass backwards only – no forward passes
Six touches per set before possession turns over
Score by grounding the ball over the opponent’s line

After a touch, the player rolls the ball backwards using a rollball, and play continues with a dummy half (just like a playmaker). The dummy half can’t score – so choose wisely!

Each game usually runs for 2 x 20-minute halves, making it a quick hit of action without taking up your whole evening.

How a Game Works

Starting the Game

  • Coin toss determines who starts with the ball.

  • Play begins with a tap at the centre mark.

Scoring

  • Score 1 point by grounding the ball over the scoreline.

  • Dummy half (the player who picks up the ball after the roll ball) cannot score.

The Touch and Six-Touch Rule

  • The team in possession has 6 touches to try to score.

  • A “touch” can be made on any part of the body, ball, or clothing.

  • After six touches, or certain errors, possession changes.

The Roll Ball

  • Performed when touched: player places the ball on the ground and rolls it backwards underfoot.

  • Dummy half picks it up and play continues.

  • Must be done on the mark and facing the defending scoreline.

Passing

  • All passes must go backwards.

  • No passing after being touched (aka “Touch and Pass” is not allowed).

The Tap

  • Restart method after a penalty.

  • Ball is placed on the ground and tapped with the foot no more than 1m.

  • Taken from the mark of the infringement.

Substitutions

  • Made at any time, but must be through the substitution box.

  • Incoming player cannot enter until outgoing player exits.

Rules That Change Possession

List of infringements that result in a turnover:

  • Ball to ground

  • Forward pass

  • Dummy half touched

  • Dummy half scores

  • Incorrect roll ball or tap

  • Stepping out of bounds

  • 6 touches completed

  • Obstruction

  • Offside play

Referees, Penalties & Fair Play

  • Touch and pass

  • Roll ball/tap not on the mark

  • Offside (7m at roll ball, 10m at tap)

  • Incorrect substitutions

  • Deliberately delaying play

  • Misconduct or foul play

Referees may award penalties, send players to the sin bin, or remove them for the rest of the game depending on the severity.
